The name Bailiffscourt originates from the chapel, which was gifted to the Abbey of Seez in Normandy after the Norman Conquest.
Monks from northern France were sent to oversee it, acting as its caretakers or ‘bailiffs’. These Benedictine monks lived peacefully in the area until the early 14th century, when rising tensions with France forced their departure, leaving the chapel to fall into disrepair.
Centuries later, during the glamour of the 1920s, the chapel was meticulously restored by Amya Phillips under the Guinness family’s ownership of the estate, bringing new life to this historic building.

The chapel’s elegance speaks for itself; however, couples are welcome to decorate the venue how they wish. On my visit, it was designed in a beautiful, understated way, with twinkling fairy lights, sashed chairs and tens of warm candlelight.
