Hastings in Sussex is a great place to visit, whether for a day trip or a long weekend. It offers the combined experience of a quirky seaside town, fascinating history and a booming food scene.
There are plenty of things to do in Hastings, whether it is shopping for bohemian gifts or enjoying delicious food by the sea.
Well known for the 1066 battle of Hastings, this quirky yet historical town has lots to offer for all ages.
The town of Hastings has seen many transformations over the years, however, one lasting legacy is that of its fishing village roots.
Hastings is an ancient “Cinque Port” which refers to one of the five French harbours spanning the South East Coast of England.
Hasting is nestled amongst the hills and offers breathtaking views across the English Channel from these hills.
It also neighbours directly the town of St. Leonards on Sea which is just a short walk and good to explore additionally.
We enjoyed the May bank holiday weekend here this year, wanting to soak up all the festivities for Jack on the Green festival.
Things To Do in Hastings
Hastings Fishermen’s Museum
This fascinating museum encapsulates the true history and workings of Hastings as a fishing town.
The museum is housed in a former church, which was originally built in 1854 to serve the fishing community within Hastings.
The museum exhibits many pictures, model boats, and fishing equipment which is an interesting insight.
Keep an eye out for the anchor on the beach near this museum, which dates back to Napoleonic times (circa 1799).

Shipwreck Museum
This museum is a charity, which displays items from various shipwrecks within the English Channel.
This is a multi-sensory experience with sound, touch and smell. This is among some free things to do in Hastings, however, donations, where possible, are appreciated.

Stade Historic Fishing Quarter
The Stade is known as a “living museum”. Starting from the Fishermen’s Museum, explore the interesting historic buildings, twittens and cat creeps.
You can book a walking tour from the Fishermen’s Museum if you want a guided tour with knowledgeable experts.
This Stade Trail is a fascinating thing to do in Hastings.

Hastings Museum and Art Gallery
This award-winning museum boasts an interesting and diverse collection. This establishment opened 125 years ago and offers the opportunity to explore art, history and culture from around the world.

Old Town
The Old Town in Hastings is a must-see, and just a stone’s throw from the beach and pier. George Street hosts an eclectic mix of independent shops and eateries.
Stroll down this charming street in Hastings and stop for a coffee. We love a potter in the gift and homeware stores here. There are always such unique pieces to buy.
Keep an eye out for Hanuskas, which is a charming cafe, where the walls are lined with books.
There are lots of laneways and little paths that lead to the top, where there are stunning views of the town and beyond. Soak in all the beautiful old architecture on the way.

West Hill Lift
The West Hill Cliff Railways first opened in 1891. It still utilises its original wooden Victorian coaches. Interestingly, it runs through a tunnel on the way up!
This costs approximately £5.50 per person. The West Hill Lift is not wheelchair friendly, however, the East Hill Lift has got ramp access.

West Hill
The West Hill is a must-see when visiting Hastings. It offers breathtaking views across Hastings and the sea. Stretching from Beachy Head in the West and out across the English Channel.
Take the West Hill Lift or opt to take the stairs which meander up from George Street and other locations in Hastings. It is a bit of a climb, our 6 and 3-year-old at the time didn’t complain, even in the rain.
There is a playground and green on top of West Hill.

Castle Ruins
The ruins of Hastings Castle are a fascinating insight into the time of 1066. This was Britain’s first Norman castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1067.
The castle boasts a spectacular view of Hastings and across the English Channel. This is a lovely place for a picnic. On-site also is a cinema where you can enjoy a twenty-minute film dedicated to the story of 1066.
This is a ticketed location, costing approximately £6.75 for an adult, and £5.40 for a child. Under 3’s go free.

Hastings Pier
Hastings Pier is a large open space, which first opened in 1872. The deck building hosts the Pavillion Bar and Restaurant which serves food until 19:00 and drinks until 19:30.
A fire destroyed Hastings Pier previously and it has since been restored.
We visited on the May bank holiday weekend and there was a live DJ, food stalls and many out enjoying the sun.
Not only does it offer beautiful views of the town and sea, but there are amusements and games on Hastings Pier for children to enjoy.

The True Crime Museum
The True Crime Museum is both an exhilarating and shocking thing to do in Hastings. Set in the seafront caves, learn all about gangsters, serial killers, prisoners and forensics.
There is even a genuine lethal injection death bed on display to creep you out! You can also get your mug shot taken for a chance to be pictured in their hall of shame, and if not, on a fridge magnet to take home!
This is open daily from 10:00-17:00

Hastings Contemporary
Hastings Contemporary is a modern art gallery which showcases both contemporary and modern art through diverse exhibitions.
It is a community hub, fostering creativity and engagement through educational programmes and events.
Hastings Contemporary is celebrated as a cultural hub in South East England. Located right on the seafront, there is a rolling timetable of events, pop-up exhibitions, talks, tours, adult classes and children’s activities.
There are family days run every Thursday during school holidays, where local artists run free, drop-in workshops.

Hastings Aquarium
Hastings Aquarium is one of our favourite things to do in Hastings with kids. This well-run aquarium is home to many sea creatures and more, from interesting fish, octopi, crabs, reptiles, crustaceans and amphibians.
There is a rolling timetable of talks, feeding times and the jungle encounter throughout the day. There is a beautiful underwater tunnel that is fun to walk through and marvel at the sea life above.
On-site is a cafe and gift shop. This is a good thing to do in Hastings if it is a rainy day.

Smugglers Adventures
Smugglers Adventures is an interactive and fun thing to do at Hastings. It is an underground network of 18th-century caves and caverns that visitors can explore.
These secret tunnels were once used by smugglers, where the hidden caves would store illegally traded goods from across the seas.
Combining history and adventure, this is an engaging attraction for families and history enthusiasts.

Hastings Mini Golf
Hastings mini golf is another fun thing to do in Hastings with kids. Located on the seafront, there are three courses of 18 holes and is suitable for all ages.
Choose from adventure golf, which is the more challenging course. Crazy golf is a more traditional course, which is good for families. The pirate golf course fires exploding cannons and exploding water throughout the day!

Source Park
The Source Park is among many active and fun things to do in Hastings. The Source is the world’s largest underground skatepark, located in the heart of Hastings on the seafront.
There is an open courtyard alongside it with local eateries, juice bars and cafes to keep you satisfied either before or after a skate.
You can use your BMX, skateboard or scooter here. You can also hire these, alongside protective gear.

Hastings Country Park
Hastings Country Park is a vast coastal nature reserve in East Sussex, featuring scenic cliffs, woodlands, and grasslands.
It offers breathtaking views of the English Channel, and extensive walking trails, and is home to diverse wildlife, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers.

Alexandra Park
Alexandra Park is over 140 years old and boasts over 100 acres of land and reservoir, to explore and enjoy.
Located in the heart of Hastings, this park is famed for its collection of trees which is thought to be one of the finest in Britain.
There are several things to enjoy in Alexandra Park, not least all of the beautiful nature, including a playground, miniature railway, cafe, multi-use games area, bandstand, streams and more.

Summerfields Woods
Summerfield Woods is a local nature reserve with numerous paths to explore the woodlands and freshwater ponds. It is located just five minutes from central Hastings.
This location is an excellent place to spot migrating birds during the autumn. Listen out for the tens of birdsong and enjoy a walk immersed in nature.

Shopping in Hastings
Butler and George
The Butler and George has to be the most interesting curiosity shop in Hastings. Filled with all things weird and wonderful, antiques, and collectables spanning across two floors.
This shop is not to be missed and well worth a visit whilst moseying the Old Town. Browse the extensive quirky collections from statues, lamps, pottery and pictures.

Golden Hands
Golden Hands is a beautiful, eclectic gift shop nestled in the Old Town. The staff here are helpful and you will find a range of nick-nacks, jewellery, gifts, cards, collectables and more.
There is a wonderful collection of crystals, incense and oil burners. The ambience in the shop is tranquil, which is one reason why it is worth visiting. This is a real gem in the heart of Hastings.

Clockwork Crow
Clockwork Crow specialises in a variety of eclectic antiques, beautiful houseplants and unique fabrics to transform your house and garden.
This is such a stunning shop and it will be hard to leave empty-handed! We opted for some colourful candles.

Eat in Hastings
Hastings’s food scene is booming, with tonnes of great restaurants and bars to choose from. Here are a small selection of Hastings’s delicious dishes.
Tonka
Tonka is a true gem and must not be missed. With innovative dishes, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, you will not be disappointed.
Let your tastebuds be elevated to the next level with the likes of black garlic glazed aubergine skewers, crab macaroni cheese or 7 spiced lamb with homemade harissa.
The menu is regularly varied and the cocktails are delicious. Do book ahead, however, as it is a small space that gets booked up quickly.

Dandelion Deli
Dandelion Deli is a family-run shop and deli, that provides wholesome, hearty snacks and meals. They serve a range of hot and cold foods from artisan deli meats, vegan lasagna mousakkas, curries, and stews.
They do a mean scotch egg and a delicious selection of teas also. This is a great spot to either grab and go, or there is seating in the downstairs area, including a garden terrace which is the perfect sun trap for enjoying your food and drinks.

Turret Grill
Many people rave about the Turret Grill, known for serving unbelievably tasty burgers, breakfast baps sandwiches and hotdogs.
Serving out of a tiny Turret, this establishment has locals and others in a chokehold. The staff are super friendly. There are veggie and vegan options also.

Goat Ledge
Take a pit stop at the popular, seafront Goat Ledge. Opt to grab and go whilst ambling along the beach, or grab a seat at the outdoor colourful seating area.
There is a range of cafe food to choose from such as pastries, coffees, butties, cakes and smoothies. This place is dog-friendly with a great selection of tunes, what more could you want?

Things To Do Near Hastings
There are some other interesting places to visit near Hastings, if you want to branch further out. Being in the beautiful 1066 County, there are other historical towns and beautiful landscapes.
St. Leonards On Sea
St. Leonards On Sea is within walking distance and directly adjacent to the main town of Hastings. It is well known for its interesting architecture, laid-back spirit and air of creativity, which draws people to the area.
We stayed in an Air BnB in St. Leonards on Sea and would walk into Hastings easily, with two children each day, exploring the seafront along the way.
Visit Norman Road, where there is an indoor food market, gallery and shop.
Top picks for St. Leonards on Sea include the Heist Indoor Food Market, St, Clements Cafe and Three Faces Tapas Restaurant.
Herstmonceux Castle
Herstmonceux Castle Estate is around a twenty-minute drive from Hastings. We stopped off here on our way to Hastings and were enamoured by the beautiful, multiple gardens and the majestic, red-brick castle.
There is a small play area for children and even a magic garden and maze for kids to enjoy amongst the finer, more manicured gardens. This was well worth the stop and we are all eager to return.
