Family Days Out in West Sussex
Family days out in Sussex are enriched by the vast amount on offer across West Sussex. Whether you are seeking a beautiful landscape to explore, a kid friendly country centre, pick your own or water sports.
Goodwood Art Foundation
The Goodwood Art Foundation is a new destination for contemporary art in Sussex. Enjoy a range of carefully crafted sculptures, tapestries, ceramics and large outdoor installations. Explore the 70-acre landscape, featuring wooded glades, ancient woodland and wildflower meadows.

This is a great family day out, enjoying the art and landscape combined. There are also family friendly events throughout the year and a child friendly menu at the restaurant.

Aldingbourne Country Centre
Aldingbourne Country Centre is a wonderful social initiative, supporting those with autism and learning disabilities.
If you are looking for endless entertainment and to be out of the house all day, then this is a good choice. Opening at 10:00 and closing at 16:00, we have often spent full days here exploring!
There is a wide variety of activities here ranging from a woodland play area/walk, soft play, water play, crazy golf, mini go-karting, maze, ride on tractors, mini play village and of course, the mini farm.

My kids are obsessed with the giant indoor slide here. We loved the little “Book Nook”, which is a cosy corner with tens of books to choose from, the perfect quiet spot to kick back, especially if emotions are getting high with little ones.
There is often a rolling time table of events such as goat grooming and feeding alpacas.
There are lots of places to enjoy your picnics or a packed lunch, and it’s always a big day out, so snackboxes are always at the ready! There is a cafe on site too, where you can get hot food, drinks and ice cream.

Fishers Farm
Fishers Farm is one of our favourite family days out in Sussex. There is a wide variety of rides and activities suitable for all ages.
The animals are well cared for with lots of different animals to see. There is both indoor and outdoor play areas to help plan for whatever weather on the day.

Weald and Downland Museum
The Weald and Downland Museum is a wonderful, immersive and educational day out for the whole family, based in the South Downs. It is a working museum of how life was in rural Sussex over the course of 1000 years. This is a hands-on experience, with visitors encouraged to get involved.

You will find historical buildings, extensive collections related to rural life, including agriculture, domestic life, trades and industries, and transport. There is a cafe on-site and lots to expore.

Petworth Park
We love a trip to Petworth Park, where the grounds offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside. This is a National Trust site, so there are often seasonal trails and events throughout the year. Keep an eye out for deer within the park. There are plenty of places to stop off for a picnic or a snack.

If you are up for it with kids, visit the Petworth House, which is home to one of the most stunning collections of artwork and sculptures. There is a cafe on site, and we love visiting the second-hand bookshop at the end, where there are always hidden gems.

Knepp Country Estate
Knepp Country Estate is a beautiful day out for little intrepid adventurers. This is a great day out for all ages, especially for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
Some highlights of Knepp Country Estate for children would be the old castle ruins, the bird hide and the tree top viewing points! You can hear a variety of birdsong here. You can use the Merlin app which is brilliant for identifying bird song, I picked up around 16 birds during a spring visit one year!

Knepp Country Estate has its walking routes clearly marked, depending on how far you wish to travel.

Amberley Museum
The Amberley Museum is an excellent family day out for all ages. This extensive museum is both interactive and interesting.

This museum is packed with exhibits of both historical and working exhibitions. We particularly enjoyed the live electricity exhibition which was excellent!
The volunteers on-site are super helpful for guidance and advice. There is also a mini train ride and bus that transports visitors around the museum, if required. There is a cafe located on-site for hot food and drinks, although we opted to bring a picnic.
Although the play area is small, my kids still enjoyed it very much. Amberley Museum is a great, wholesome family day out. If you arrive on train, you get a discount on entrance.

West Wittering
West Wittering Beach is an award-winning, stunning, sandy beach with family-friendly facilities. It makes a nice change from the largely pebbled beaches across Sussex. West Wittering Beach reminds me of some of my favourite beaches in Cornwall.
Please be aware that it gets very busy in summer, so it might be worth enjoying it in off-peak season.

There is a cafe on site serving hot food and refreshments. There are several campsites in the surrounding areas if you want to make a trip out of it.

Sky Park Farm
Sky Park Farm is a deer farm, with an adventure playground, farm shop, visitor centre and cafe on site. The Manor of Harting is known historically for its deer parks from medieval times to the 18th century. The adventure playground is a woodland adventure for kids, with two dedicated spaces.

Lovingly restored by husband and wife duo, the restaurant has won local awards for it’s food. There are picnic areas on site too.

Ferring Country Centre
Ferring Country Centre is a wonderful, socially minded initiative. It is also a great day out for the family! They have not long renovated the cafe that serves delicious drinks and food.
The playground is modern and well kept. The whole family can enjoy a potter through this farm, which is not huge. It is nicely contained with enough animals to keep little ones engaged.

There is also a soft play for smaller children within the cafe and they are installing a “jumping pillows” style activity more recently.
You may also be tempted by some beautiful plants or flowers grown at the on-site nursery, or something from the gift shop.

Sandgate Park
Sandgate Park is a quiet, family walk where you can discover the whimsical fairy bridge within the woods. There are plenty of trees to climb here, varying paths throughout the woods and tree swings.

East Beach Worthing
East Beach Worthing is one of my top places to visit in Worthing. The playground and splash pad (which runs from May to September) are always a hit with the kids.

East Beach Studio is brimming with creativity with all of the variety studios and independent sellers.
I always feel relaxed at East Beach Worthing knowing the kids will have a good runabout, whether at the playground or beach while I can enjoy a nice coffee from Coast.

Brooklands Pleasure Park
Brooklands Pleasure Park has had a recent revamp of its play area. It is state-of-the-art and inclusive; you could easily spend a whole day here.
Another great aspect of Brooklands is the smooth, winding paths which are a great hit if roller skating, skateboarding or scooting. It’s a great place for little ones to learn how to ride their bikes and scooters.

The new cafe has plenty of options for snacks, lunch and hot drinks. However, we often opt to bring a picnic and make use of the numerous picnic benches within the park itself.
There are many ducks and birds at Brooklands, which my little ones enjoy watching floating in the pond.

Fishbourne Palace
Fishbourne Palace was once the largest Roman home in Britain. Today, it’s ruins are open to visitors, where there are events running throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy the recreated Roman gardens alongside one of the largest mosaics in the country.

Harbour Park
Harbour Park in Littlehampton is known to be one of the best amusement and soft play parks around. Enjoy many of the beachside rides, or opt to head indoors if the weather is not great.

We love exploring the seafront here. There are some lovely family-friendly things to do in Littlehampton.

Highdown Gardens
Highdown Gardens are a beautiful getaway from life’s hustle and bustle, near Goring-by-Sea. It is completely free to park there and enter the gardens.
There are numerous sections of the gardens to explore, and they are very well tended to.

I love the thoughtful touches in the newly refurbished visitors centre. They have a stock of matts and childrens wildlife books, encouraging families to sit and relax on a nice day within the gardens.
My little ones enjoy the waterfall and spotting the various birds chirping around. There is a cafe on site and the food at Highdown Hotel is delicious if you wanted to stay for food.
If you have some extra energy, you could pay a visit to Highdown Hill (outside of the gardens), offering panoramic views of the towns and English Channel below.

Arundel Wetlands Centre
Arundel Wetlands Centre is a great family day out, especially for all the nature enthusiasts.
Watch the diving duck feed at midday, take a safari boat through the wetlands and explore the surroundings, or enjoy pond dipping sessions between April – October. There are a host of activities on for the summer also.

Swanbourne Lake
Swanbourne Lake is a lovely circular walk. My kids both love this trek around the lake, as they enjoy hearing all the various birds and climbing the sides along the way. We enjoyed this as a multi-generational day out once, where the grandparents enjoyed taking the little ones out on the boat, feeding the ducks with bird seed from the cafe and of course, the obligatory ice cream.

They also enjoy the hike up to Hiorne Tower. The lake offers a 30 minute boating experience where you can feed the ducks up close. Purchase a bag of bird seed from the cafe on site for 50p.
This is one of our favourite things to do in Arundel.

RSPB Pulborough Brooks
RSPB Pulborough Brooks is a wonderful family day out, immersed in nature. This is a great place in particular if you are interested in birds. We love the merlin app that helps us identify bird song around us and you will be really surprised about the types of birds surrounding you.
There are various trails you can wander, with stunning vistas of the surrounding landscapes. We even saw some gorgeous highland cows on our winter walk one year.

It only cost £4 per adult to visit here, with under 5’s going free and our 8 year old got in free as it was his first time. There is a cafe and visitor centre on sit, with many volunteers and staff around to offer guidance and advice.
Top tip: bring a pair of binoculars if you have them!

Cissbury Ring
If you are looking for a free family day out in Sussex, then head out into nature! We love going up Cissbury Ring and admiring the stunning, panoramic views below.

There are often wild horses grazing up here, making it all the more whimsical and exciting for kids! We like to pick blackberries up here in the summer and bring a hot chocolate in the winter. It is also one of our favourite places to see the sunset in Worthing.

Chanctonbury Ring
Chanctonbury Ring is a lovely family walk, offering breathtaking views. Being an old Iron Age fort, it is one of the most prominent hills along the South Downs Way, and a great place for walking your dog.

Some people choose to walk from Cissbury Ring to Chanctonbury Ring, which might be better for older children rather than little legs.

Family Days Out in Mid Sussex
Leonardslee Gardens
Leonardslee Gardens is a real gem in the heart of Sussex. These ancient gardens reopened in 2019, having been closed for ten years, and they are a wonderful family day out in Sussex.
The gardens and lakes are vast for exploring on a day out, lined with interesting sculptures and creations. Leonardslee often has children’s activities running throughout the year and activity packs to complete.

There is a wallaby area, where families can watch during feeding time. There is an extensive, well-equipped play area with a cafe on site. My kids also enjoyed the doll museum.

Borde Hill Gardens
Borden Hill Garden is another beautiful day out for the family. There are lots of rare and interesting plants here, an adventure playground for the kids and refreshing woodland walks.

Washbrooks Farm
Washbrooks Farm has been run by the same family for generations, sticking to the ethos of good value for money, home cooked food, a friendly atmosphere and a place to relax and have fun with family and friends.
There are both indoor and outdoor play area, including sand pit, tractor rides, adventure playground, jumping pillows, soft play and ball pit.

There is a variety of animals here, from Shetland ponies, cows, geese, donkies, alpacas, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and more.
You can take a lovely walk around the paddocks and enjoy stunning views of the South Downs. The tearooms is popular here with a range of home cooked meals with locally sourced ingredients, health snacks, kids meal deals and treats too!

Nymans Gardens and House
Nymans Gardens and House is a National Trust site and makes for a beautiful day out.
The Rose Garden is particularly beautiful at the start of summer. The winding paths make for a lush walk amongst the beautiful trees and planters.

In the summer, there are lots of family-friendly activities. Expect badminton, yoga, den building and an obstacle course on the Combers Field.
You can visit the old stately home ruins and learn about its history. There is plenty of parking, however the cafe has not so great reviews and can be expensive, so make sure to pack a picnic to avoid disappointment.

Wakehurst Gardens
There are over 500 acres to explore at Wakehurst, with its lush gardens, woodlands and nature reserve. This makes it the perfect day out in Sussex with kids.
Explore the childrens garden with mud kitchen, the wild wood or the trunk trek. There are some beautiful natural play spaces peppered across the estate, such as the labyrinth and woodland world.

Kids up to the age of 16 go free at Wakehurst, making it all the more appealing for a day out. There are often themed, seasonal trails available to make the day out more interactive.

Tilgate Park
Tilgate Park in Crawley is an excellent day out. There are a bunch of great activities to choose from. The large lake and surrounding wooded areas are the perfect areas to explore on foot. The walled gardens are lovely for a pitstop, with a cafe serving up delicious refreshments, lunch and ice cream.
Tilgate Nature Centre is renowned nationally, and home to various species from owls to terrapins, otters, reindeers and raccoon dogs.

The lake facilitates water activities such as kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and pedalo boats. There is also Go Ape on site, where you can pre-book treetop activities for younger and older children.

Southwater Country Park
Southwater Country Park is a stunning place for a family day out. The beautiful lake is lovely for a circular walk around.
You can make use of activities such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing or hire a bike. On a nicer day, many little ones choose to get into the lake for a paddle and play on the mini beach.

My kids love the extensive Dinosaur Island Playground here at Southwater Country Park. They particularly enjoyed following the dinosaur footprints around the park to find the playground. There is a cafe on site or plenty of spaces to stop and have a picnic.

Tulleys Farm
Tulley’s Farm is brilliant for a family day out. They run a whole host of seasonal events throughout the year. Events include the stunning Tulip Festival, Pumpkin Picking, Christmas Events and Fright Nights for Halloween.

My kids love coming here as they can have a good run around, meet the friendly roaming characters and there is a range of food vans to choose from.

Family Days Out in East Sussex
Family Days out in Sussex would not be the same with the amount of wonderful options across East Sussex. East Sussex is beautifully rural but still has loads to do along the seafront and parks.

Newhaven Fort
Newhaven Fort is historically a military structure, built in 1871. Today it is a family-friendly tourist attraction. It has events rotating throughout the year, a large adventure playground and a historical exhibition/museum highlighting it’s military history.

There is also a vintage cafe on site for delicious cake and coffee.

Paradise Park
Paradise Park offers a range of plant houses to explore, featuring several small lakes, waterfalls, and fountains offering a beautiful experience.
Visit the beautiful gardens, where children can feed the fish in the spring and summer months. They can also enjoy the brilliant earth museum, dinosaur safari, miniature railway, crazy golf and play zone.

There are plenty of seating points dotted throughout the gardens, providing the perfect opportunity to take a break or have a snack. Alternatively, head to our restaurant and enjoy some refreshments from there.

Bluebell Railway
The Bluebell Railway is one of Sussex’s heritage attractions. Enjoy this scenic route, filled with adventure, history and excitement. There is a range of events and experiences throughout the year, a museum on site and pit stops for a much-needed coffee or ice cream.
Bluebell Railway runs across 11 miles from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead in Sussex, stopping at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote. There is a play and picnic area at the Kingscote station.

Visit Lewes
Lewes is a charming town, steeped in rich culture and history. The castle is always fun to climb with kids, offering beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The nature reserve is a wonderful place to get lost and immersed in nature for a few hours.
Lewes is a family-friendly town, check out the Depot cinema on a rainy day, where they have a good kids menu in the restaurant.

Devils Dyke
Devils Dyke is a fantastic, scenic place to walk as a family, located just outside of Brighton. It lies amongst the South Downs Way, with stunning rolling hills to walk and climb.

There is a pub to grab drinks and lunch from by the main car park. It is also a great place to watch the sunset from. You will often see many kites and wind gliders up here, which is fun to watch. There are lots of myths and folklore surrounding Devil’s Dyke itself, some believing the devil himself dug the punch bowl-like feature.
My absolute favourite hidden gem amongst the hills here is Wildflower Cafe, by Seddlescombe Farm. It is somewhat a yearly, birthday tradition for us to walk up Devil’s Dyke and grab some delicious lunch and cake from this place.

Stanmer Park
Stanmer Park has beautiful woodland walks and extensive open lands to explore. It is a wonderful family day out to refresh and recalibrate.
Within the park is Stanmer Village, a unique and iconic example of an 18th-century village which is still occupied and working today. There is a lovely tea room in Stanmer Village, offering a delicious menu and afternoon tea.

Stanmer Park is known as the “gate of the South Downs”. A whole day could be spent here exploring, picnicking and enjoying the outdoors.

One Garden
Located within Stanmer Park is the beautiful One Garden. They are opening a new butterfly garden this summer, just in time for May Half term 2026. The One Garden is free to enter and enjoy, with a lovely farm shop and child friendly cafe on site. There is a toy corner in the cafe which kids can enjoy when they are done at the table.

There are seasonal events throughout the year for families to enjoy, alongside interesting workshops.

Preston Park
Preston Park is one of Brighton and Hove’s largest and well loved open spaces.
Preston Park has lots to see and do and is a great day out for all ages. The is a large childrens playground with sandpit, gardens to explore, lots of unique buildings such as the clock tower and tile houses.
There is also facilities for a wide range of sports including tennis, cricket, football, basketball and an historical cycling velodrome.

You could make a full family day out by visiting Preston Manor and Preston Park Rock Garden, additionally. Cafe Rust at the Manor serves up the best cake and refreshments.

Brighton Palace Pier
Brighton Palace Pier is a classic activity to do with the family. A recent fee of £1 has been added to enter the pier, to aid essential maintenance.
Enjoy a host of rides and attractions while on the pier, kick back and have a drink at Horatio’s Bar, or simply enjoy an ice cream while your little ones run wild at the soft play.

Wrist bands are available on the website with discounted prices if bought in advance.

Brighton Pavillion
Brighton Pavillion is a luxurious and interesting place to visit. The Pavillion itself does have an entry fee but is a nice place to potter around, especially on a rainy or hot day for shelter!
There is often a rotation of family friendly activities on here and a great place to learn about history.

The gardens here are always teeming with life, people catching up, and buskers playing music. It is a lovely place to sit and relax in the gardens whilst the kids run around. Bring a picnic or grab some refreshments from the on-site cafe. Just beware of the seagulls!

Kings Road Playpark
This beautiful seafront play area is the perfect spot for grown-ups to relax whilst the kids busy themselves. With a natural sandpit, sturdy climbing frames and a paddling pool, it is easy to spend a few hours here.

The paddling pool is open from May – to mid-September, with the option to hire a deck chair and seek refreshments from the cafe.

Hove Lagoon
Hove Lagoon is the perfect family day out with heaps of activities to keep everyone entertained. This scenic beachside location has a cafe on-site dishing out all the essentials from hot food, ice cream and coffee.
There are a range of water sports on offer, from kayaking SUP, wakeboarding, windsurfing and more.

There is a refreshing paddle pool open for little ones between the May bank holiday and mid-September. There is a cafe on site if you want to grab lunch or refreshments. There is a skate park for the older kids (and adults!) to enjoy.

Herstmonceux Castle Estate
We visited Herstmonceux Castle Estate on our way to Hastings recently and we were blown away by its beauty.
I absolutely loved the gardens in full bloom here during the summer, with around seven different gardens to explore. We loved exploring the hidden magic garden with wooden toadstools.

There is also a children’s climbing area, which they enjoyed mucking about in. Following a large refurbishment, the cafe is now open 7 days a week.

Observatory Science Centre
On-site at Herstmonceux is the renowned Observatory Science Centre. The world-famous astronomical centre hosts plenty of interactive science and discovery activities amongst its iconic domes.

They have a spectacular schedule throughout the year, from star gazing evenings, astronomy festival, astronomy courses, science festival and childrens activities. This is an education charity, with booking suggested.

Battle Abbey
Battle Abbey is a wonderful, historical place to visit with the family. Explore the abbey ruins alongside the walled gardens. There are running events and themed activities throughout the year to keep little ones engaged.
Learn all about the drama of 1066 by walking the battlefield and exploring the visitors centre with interactive activities. There is a cafe on-site. We also enjoyed visiting the high street too, visiting a wonderful ice cream parlour too.

Sheffield Park and Garden
Sheffield Park boasts acres of Grade I listed landscaped garden and lakes, surrounded by historic parkland and woodland. The woodland play trail is a hit with the kids and the rolling landscapes are a beautiful walk. It is particularly beautiful in autumn,

Hastings Old Town
Hastings is a wonderful day out with kids. Mosey through the old fisherman’s town, pop into the free fishermen museum, enjoy the relaxation of sea life centre.
The Old Town is charming and full of character, with old school seaside amusements always a hit with the kids.

If you are feeling up for it, take a hike up to the West Hill at the top of the town and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the coastline.
Alternatively, use the classic Cliff Railways that will take the burden of the steep hike up away. The scenic views from Beachy Head across the English channel are breath taking.

Alexandra Park
Alexandra Park in Hastings is great for a family day out. Located just a ten-minute walk from the town centre, this park is Grade II listed and maintains it’s green flag status since 2005.
It has all the attractions for a great day out, from open spaces to run about in, a café, play areas, and great walks, ponds and streams, and a unique collection of rare and unusual trees.

Knockhatch Adventure Park
Knockhatch Adventure Park is one of the best family days out in Sussex. Families of mixed age children can easily spend the whole day here.

There are both outdoor and indoor play areas, ranging from splash pads, dinosaur soft play, various rides including drop slides, avalanche slide, rowing boat lake and more.
There are indoor immersive play areas, outdoor jumping pillows, rock climbing, and plenty of play areas to boot. We loved ending our day in the big-top circus tent, where local theatre students perform circus skills and other acts.
There is a wildlife section where you can see llamas, meerkats, guinea pigs, emus and more.

Camber Sands
Probably one of Sussex’s most popular beaches due to its stretches of white sand and dunes, this can be a great family day out if you go out of season or outside of peak times.

Early morning or late afternoon visits in the summer are best, as it tends to quieten down at those times. It is a lovely beach that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons, all year round.
It is also a great place to look out for wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for seals, butterflies, lizards, birds and more.

Bodiam Castle
Bodiam Castle is a great family day out. Being a National Trust site, there are seasonal events and themes throughout the year.

Kids can meet characters from a time long ago, dress up as knights, and discover the medieval way of life. The castle is surrounded by natural beauty, which makes it a wonderful place to explore.
Bring a picnic or there is a cafe on site. The castle itself is open to explore and it is very picturesque. We visited here before a weekend away in Hastings with the family.

Wilderness Wood
Wilderness Wood is a wonderful retreat into the Sussex woodlands. It is a 60-acre community woodland, running sustainably minded activities such as green woodworking for adults and families, home-ed forest school, community fayre and bushcraft for families.

Drusillas Park
Drusillas Park is one of the best family days out in Sussex. Drusillas is known as one of the best small zoos in Europe. It is suitable for children aged between 2-12.

There are fun rides and plenty of animals to see. There is a splash pad to cool down on warmer days and an African style safari adventure. My kids adore the Jurrasic Jungle and unlimited family rides.
